re-shoot >-<
Genre: Alternative Pop / Hyperpop / Experimental Pop (working)
The initial idea for this track came from an unexpected place. While rewatching one of my favorite shows, Breaking Bad, I realized how much I hated a particular episode: Season 5, Episode 1. I remember wishing that episode had played out differently and thinking how I would have personally done it. Yet, in that moment of distaste, my mind led me to think about how often I feel the same exact way about moments within my own life.
"re-shoot >-< " is a track about wishing life had a second take. The title referencing the idea of filming a scene/episode over again, a metaphor for the mental replaying of conversations, decisions, and moments that linger long after they've happened.
Through the mix of vulnerability, irony, and humor seeded within the lyrics, the song embodies the feelings of pitiful self-reflection. Yet, by the time the song is resolved, the emotional tension is broken with a vocal sample from Breaking Bad Season 4 Episode 7: "PZZ WRONG ANSWER! that's what the kids call epic fail...", conceding that these thoughts are nothing larger than just thoughts, and masking vulnerability through humor.
From a production standpoint, I wanted the music to strengthen these emotional shifts through contrasts between more intimate verses and larger, more energetic sections. I produced, recorded, and mixed the track entirely myself using the digital audio workstation FL Studio. The equipment I used was relatively minimal: a MIDI keyboard for composition, alongside a Shure MV7X microphone for recording vocals. Aside from a single guitar riff, nearly every sound heard throughout the track was created electronically using virtual instruments and sound design.
The electric guitar riff reflects a production technique that has become central to my creative process. Rather than recording a polished performance, because I’m honestly not great at playing the guitar, I first played a demo of the idea on guitar before manipulating, stretching, layering, and processing the audio until it became something entirely different. That approach of starting with a straightforward musical idea and then completely recontextualizing it through production is one that is a recurring part of my workflow. It allows me to transform familiar sounds into something unexpected while giving the music a more personal identity.
Lyrics:
Verse :
It’s the TED-Talk someone should’ve told you
It’s the bed rotted devil on your shoulder
It’s the goddamn; only getting older
Then we’ll sum it to inertia
It’s the first time you got last place
It’s the last time you ordered that way
And it’s my Chekov’s gun, the one that's sorting it all
Bridge :
On my new-wave punk shit
If I wanted, I could quit, but I need it to function
Know I’m shitty and pathetic, but focus on one thing
AND I WAS IN FOR YEARS, BUT YOU FUCKING WON’T LEAVE ME ALONE
Pre-Chorus:
Huh? What’s up with my headspace?
Think I need to renovate
I ain't paying rent, cuz I'm saving for the next date
I woke up the next day, with nothing but a thought...
still let it tear me apart
Outro:
Come on!
I hate this episode
But you already knew that
If I could keep the role
Would you let me re…
I hate this, hate that
I hate this, hate that
I hate this, hate that
PZZ WRONG ANSWER! that's what the kids call epic fail...
